Google Hummingbird- A new Era in Search Engine Optimization
Hummingbird– That’s an interesting naming choice for the latest Google search engine update. On asked why Google had a simple but elegant answer:
Precision and Speed.
Before we get into the gritty details, let’s learn what a search algorithm is. It’s basically a system that sorts through all the billions of pages in the world wide web to provide you with the most accurate search results. You can think of it as the recipe Google or Bing or any such search engine uses to crawl, index and pick information which it believes has the best answers.
The change was announced on September 26, 2013. It isn’t a static update, Google keeps pushing its boundaries every time it can. Although being the first complete overhaul of the entire algorithm, this doesn’t mean that the older algorithms such as Page Rank are dead. There are over 200 new modules being integrated into the new Hummingbird update. PageRank works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is. Instead of heavily relying on just this method, Hummingbird revolutionizes the search procedure by the usage of Conversational search.
A search engine that remembers your previous queries and builds on it. It also goes into the semantics and understands what you’re searching for rather than just blindly filtering through words.
Let’s take an example:
“What’s the closest place to buy a furniture to my home?”
The older algorithm would focus on the keywords “buy” and “furniture”.
There would be good results but obviously, they are not optimized.
Hummingbird focus’ on what the words mean. It understands that you’re looking for something nearby. In case you’ve integrated your location with Google, it will use that information to provide you with a tailor-made result. What this does it provides you with pages that match with the meaning rather than just the words.
Are you wondering if the old ways of SEO using keywords are dead?
No way. High-quality original content is the best way to generate SEO. If your business keeps that it in mind, no matter what the update, the results will be optimal. The indexing of information and generations of backlinks are all the same. What remained important in the past still does. All Hummingbird does it opens new and exciting ways for consumers to find your brand.
Google Hummingbird is designed to apply the advanced searching technologies to billions of pages from across the web. The Google Knowledge Graph is a system that Google launched in the May of 2012. This API understands facts- about people, places, and things. It builds networks between these statistics and can calculate new ones.
Google Hummingbird shines its best when it’s working along with the Knowledge Graph. Google can call upon its Knowledge Graph facts and the generated results will be listed on the top in the form of an information card.
In short, Google Hummingbird is tailor-made to serve modern search demands, rather than relying on technologies more suited to the earlier days.
